It Starts at the Foothills of the Himalayan Mountains
Pakistan is the 10th largest rice producer and the 4th largest rice exporter in the world, with a global trade share of 10% and 3.5 million hectares of land dedicated to rice production. These are meaningful numbers, but it’s the quality of Pakistani rice (and ours, in particular) that makes us most proud. Our location in Punjab at the foothills of the Himalayan mountains is universally known as the home of the best basmati in the world. The unique climate and soil enriched by glacial meltwater produce a very high-quality product naturally.

PUNJAB & POETRY, MORE THAN 4,500 YEARS OF BASMATI EXCELLENCE
Basmati, a Hindi word meaning “fragrant queen,” has been cultivated on the Indian subcontinent since around 2,500 BC in the Punjab region, covering parts of present-day India and Pakistan. The first written mention of Basmati rice comes from the 18th-century Punjabi epic poem, Heer Ranjha, written by Earis Shah. This poem highlights the popularity of basmati among Indian royalty, especially during the Mughal Empire. Favoring the delicate aroma and slender grains, the Mughal emperors’ appreciation led to widespread cultivation and facilitated its trade.
In 1933, the legendary Basmati 370 took root in the historic fields of Kala Shah Kaku, Pakistan, when the Rice Research Farm, established in 1926, identified, tested, and officially released the first pure-line variety. This milestone marked the official origin of modern basmati rice, blending centuries of traditional cultivation with modern science and innovation.
